An interview with Neon Tapehead

An Italian translation is available here.

Neon Tapehead is a russian 80s inspired electro funk band who recently released their new EP "Never Say Never". To talk about their new record and their music in general, Neon Tapehead accepted our proposal for an interview which we are today offering our readers.

125esima Strada: How did you guys come up with the idea of playing 80's inspired music?

Neon Tapehead: All of us, the band members, found their love to 80’s music in different moments of life. But since we were born in 90’s and grew up in 2000’s it was so nice to open this nostalgic world of 80’s music from Funk to Synth Wave with all that unique feelings and moods of culture, movies, TV series in modern or current vibe. And then in 2010s we saw a lot new artists from smaller ones to more popular who started using 80’s elements in their new productions. We’ve found that it is so nice that we can use our current possibilities with all that Macs, iPhones, internet to bring those old emotions and connect them to our present and our future. And that is what we try to achieve with Neon Tapehead inner university itself :)

125esima Strada: Let's talk about your latest EP Never Say Never. What's the story behind it? How were these songs created?

Neon Tapehead: These songs were began with beats and vibes which were born with Dmitry Ursul’s vintage synths collection. In terms of lyrics all these songs are about the love, of course! It could be hard or could be easy but you live when you love and you love when you live. It was easy to write this songs because it is exactly the way we feel!

125esima Strada: I think that this EP has a strong 80's vibe that goes even beyond the music, I mean it conveys the optimism of the 80's. Are you guys fans of the 80's popular culture in general?

Neon Tapehead: Exactly! Just as we said before, we were so influenced by all that nostalgic feelings of 80’s which were lost in most of modern popular music that we can’t do anything but give that a new live and adapt that to our present.

125esima Strada: Is there any song on the record you guys like better than the others? If so, why?

Neon Tapehead: It is really hard to answer this question. Will it be trivial if we say that our songs are like our children and we can’t choose the most favorite one? :) In terms of production we are proud with all of these five songs. We tried to show different aspects of R’n’B/Funk/Synth Wave music in this EP, so each of the songs was based on different sub genres of this whole big genre of music. Hope that we made it ;)

125esima Strada: My favorite one is Know What I Want because of the groove that Maya gives it in the chorus. What's the story behind this song?

Neon Tapehead: Thanks! And yes! This song is a real banger for sure! Actually it was absolutely different song with different vibe in the beginning. But later on Maya came to us with that banging vocal riff "I get it get it brrr POW" and we were so amazed with that so we changed the entire beat, add new synths and that became our hit single from the album. So the meaning of that song is that you should know what you really want and try to achieve that every day of your life! Even if your goals and wishes seem inconsistent sometimes :)

125esima Strada: Who are the music artists that inspired you while creating this record?

Neon Tapehead: There are a lot of them! From golden era (Rick James, The GAP Band, Kleeer, Zapp) to modern (Lizzo, Bruno Mars, Chromeo, Tuxedo, The APX). And we try to find our place among these names :)

125esima Strada: Who would be your all time favorites instead?

Neon Tapehead: We could never say just one name for sure! We love the genre itself and we thankful to all those artists who played their roles in the Funk/R’n’B/Soul foundation!

125esima Strada: What can you tell us about the musical panorama in Russia nowadays? Are there other bands besides you guys that you would recommend?

Neon Tapehead: We have some local artists which are inspired with something similar to what we were inspired with. Here are some of the names: Pompeya, Tesla Boy, TIHOTIHO (our friends, by the way we just released our funky remix for their song Египет)
