British rock singer Chez Kane published her debut solo album this year produced by Italian label Frontiers Records. To talk about her 80s inspired record, Chez accepted our proposal for an interview that we are today offering our readers.

125esima Strada: Hello Chez and first of all thanks for your time. Let's start from your debut album, where does your love for 80s inspired music come from?

Chez Kane: Hey, no problem and thank you also! My love for 80s inspired music all began when I was around thirteen years old. I heard Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar On Me playing on the radio and instantly fell in love! My parents then bought me their album and you could say the rest is history. Haha.


125esima Strada: How were these songs born? What's the story behind them?

Chez Kane: The songs on my debut album were all written by the lovely Danny Rexon, frontman of the band Crazy Lixx. He is an incredible song writer and I feel so fortunate to have been able to work with such a talented guy to launch my solo career. I am so in love with this style of music and he has done such a great job in bringing that late 80s feel in to my album but with a fresh approach.


125esima Strada: I like Defender of The Heart because it's more melodic than the other songs and because the text is also quite peculiar. What is the story of this song?

Chez Kane: I can’t really answer what the story is behind the songs on the album as I am not the writer, we would need to ask Danny, but I totally agree with what you have said in the question, it is the more melodic song of the album and a very powerful song with great sentiment.


125esima Strada: Who are your favorites of the 80s scene that inspired you most?

Chez Kane: It started with Def Leppard, then I discovered Pat Benatar and Robin Beck and I always remember being blown away and thinking that they were so awesome, they looked so cool and I was instantly inspired!

125esima Strada: Let's talk about your YouTube channel also. You have a lot of covers, most of which are power ballads such as Alone by Heart or Forever by Kiss; which one is your favorite of all those songs and why?

Chez Kane: That is a tough question because I started my YouTube channel for the love of singing songs that I love to sing so I genuinely love every song that I have covered for my channel.
Just off the top of my head… Edge of a Broken Heart by Vixen was a really fun song to sing but like I said, I love all of them. Hehe!


125esima Strada: What I think is surprising is that you have a lot of ballads on your channel, but none on your solo album. How come? Isn't this a weird choice, especially for an AOR album?

Chez Kane: I don’t think it’s a weird choice, we did discuss whether the album needed a ballad but Danny and I both agreed that it wasn’t missing when we played the album through as Defender of the Heart was strongly standing alone as the closest to a ballad.

I’m sure a ballad will be on its way at some point in the near future, this is just the beginning!


125esima Strada: You are also one of the front-women of a band called Kane'd, in which the two other singers are your two sisters. The sound of Kane'd is very different from your solo recordings, much more hard rock oriented. Are these the two sides of your musical personality?

Chez Kane: Oh yes, 100%. I love lots of different styles of rock music. It all started with 80s inspired rock and I will always have a major soft spot for it, but I have also gone on to love lots of genres of rock and that definitely shows in the writing of the Kane’d songs.


125esima Strada: What do you plan for your future? More solo albums? More Kane'd? More of both?
I would like more of both and I’m sure there will be!

Chez Kane: I am currently very busy putting the show together for the upcoming solo gigs and I have a few things going on behind the scenes that I can’t discuss right now but for anyone reading this, please stay connected with me on my social media platforms for any future updates.

125esima Strada: Ciao Chez e anzitutto grazie del tempo che ci stai dedicando. Iniziamo dal tuo album di debutto, da dove viene il tuo amore per la musica ispirata agli anni 80?

Chez Kane: Ciao, di nulla e grazie a te! Il mio amore per la musica ispirata agli anni 80 è iniziato quando avevo circa tredici anni. Ho sentito Pour Some Sugar On Me dei Def Leppard alla radio e mi sono subito innamorata! I miei genitori a quel punto mi hanno comprato l’album e il resto è storia. Ahaha.


125esima Strada: Come sono nate queste canzoni? Che storia c’è dietro?

Chez Kane: Le canzoni del mio primo album sono state scritte dall’ottimo Danny Rexon, frontman dei Crazy Lixx. È un bravissimo autore e mi sento fortunata ad aver potuto lavorare con un uomo di tale talento per lanciare la mia carriera solista. Adoro questo stile musicale e ha fatto un ottimo lavoro nel portare nel mio album le atmosfere della fine degli anni 80 con un approccio moderno.


125esima Strada: A me piace Defender of The Heart perché è più melodica delle altre canzoni e perché anche il testo è particolare. Qual è la storia di questa canzone?

Chez Kane: Non posso dire precisamente quali storie ci siano dietro alle canzoni perché non le ho scritte io, dovremmo chiedere a Danny, ma sono completamente d’accordo con ciò che hai detto, è la canzone più melodica dell’album ed è molto potente e piena di sentimento.


125esima Strada: Chi sono i tuoi preferiti della scena anni 80 che ti hanno influenzato di più?

Chez Kane: È iniziato tutto con i Def Leppard, poi ho scoperto Pat Benatar e Robin Beck e mi ricordo di esserne stata subito rapita e di aver pensato che fossero molto brave, avevano un look veramente figo e ne sono stata immediatamente ispirata!

125esima Strada: Parliamo anche del tuo canale YouTube. Ci sono molte cover, la maggioranza delle quali sono power ballad come Alone degli Heart o Forever dei Kiss; qual è la tua preferita di queste canzoni e perché?

Chez Kane: È una domanda difficile perché ho avviato il canale YouTube per la passione di cantare canzoni che mi piace cantare e amo genuinamente tutte le canzoni che ho registrato per il mio canale. Così su due piedi… Edge of a Broken Heart delle Vixen è stata molto divertente da cantare, ma come ho detto le amo tutte. Hehe!


125esima Strada: Una cosa che trovo sorprendente è che ci sono molte ballad sul tuo canale, ma non ce n’è nell’album solista. Come mai? Non è una scelta strana, specialmente per un album AOR?

Chez Kane: Non credo sia una scelta strana, abbiamo discusso se nell’album servisse una ballad ma io e Danny eravamo d’accordo che non se ne sentiva il bisogno quando abbiamo ascoltato l’album dall’inizio alla fine perché Defender of the Heart si distingueva fortemente come quella che più assomigliava a una ballad.

Sono sicura che prima o poi arriverà una ballad, siamo solo all’inizio!


125esima Strada: Tu sei anche una delle frontwomen del gruppo Kane’d in cui le altre due cantanti sono le tue sorelle. Il suono dei Kane’d è molto diverso dalle tue incisioni soliste, molto più orientato all’hard rock. Sono le due facce della tua personalità musicale?

Chez Kane: Sì, al 100%. Mi piacciono molti stili diversi di musica rock. È iniziato tutto con il rock ispirato agli anni 80 e avrò sempre un debole per questo genere, ma ho attraversato molti generi di rock e si vede bene nella scrittura delle canzoni dei Kane’d.


125esima Strada: Cosa hai in programma per il futuro? Altri album solisti? Altri album dei Kane’d? Entrambe le cose?

Chez Kane: Al momento sono molto impegnata nel preparare lo show per i miei concerti imminenti e ci sono un paio di cose in corso dietro le quinte di cui adesso non posso parlare ma per chiunque stia leggendo, restate connessi con me sui social network per essere informati degli sviluppi futuri.

Chez Kane - Chez Kane

Il 2021 ha visto l'esordio discografico solista di Chez Kane, nuova giovane interprete proveniente dal Regno Unito prodotta dalla celeberrima Frontiers Records. Chez, il cui nome completo è Cheryl Kane, ha già all'attivo tre album in studio pubblicati tra il 2013 e il 2018 con i Kane'd, gruppo di cui è frontwoman insieme alle sorelle Stephanie e Stacey. Ma mentre nel terzetto con le sorelle interpreta un hard rock grintoso e aggressivo, nel suo disco solista abbandona questa strada in favore del rock melodico di cui la Frontiers ha fatto il suo marchio di fabbrica.

L'album solista di Chez è composto da dieci pezzi caratterizzati da una formula tanto semplice quanto efficace: tastiere, melodia e la voce potente di Chez che creano un perfetto connubio di AOR ottantiano ispirato ai giganti dell'epoca. Il disco è improntato sui brani veloci, tanto che i ritmi sono rallentati solo dal midtempo Defender of The Heart. I restati nove brani sono invece energici e coinvolgenti, ricchi di cori e dai ritornelli che entrano in testa già dal primo giro.

Tra i pezzi meglio riusciti troviamo sicuramente la velocissima Rocket On The Radio, impreziosita dal coro sul ritornello, e la poderosa traccia di apertura Better Than Love il cui intro di tastiera riporta alle atmosfere di Runaway dei Bon Jovi. Spiccano anche All of It, ricca di richiami ai Def Leppard, e la gioiosa Get It On in cui Chez attacca a cantare a secco prima che entrino gli strumenti e che il brano decolli.

Stupisce in parte la scelta di non includere neanche una ballad in questo album, perché il ricco canale YouTube di Chez mostra invece che la sua voce è adattissima a quel genere di canzone visto il numero di cover in cui si cimenta che spaziano da Alone degli Heart, fino a Open Arms dei Journey e Forever dei Kiss, brani in cui mostra una potenza e un'espressività uniche. Ma alla fine poco importa, perché questo disco è fresco e divertente e non ha momenti bassi. La carriera di Chez Kane è solo all'inizio e siamo sicuri che molti altri aspetti della sua ottima vocalità le regaleranno molta gioia in futuro e a noi porteranno tanta altra ottima musica come quella del suo primo disco.
